Sisu

Lapland is a vast and sparsely populated region that stretches across the northern parts of Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Russia. It is characterized by its Arctic climate, rugged terrain, and unique wildlife, including reindeer, arctic foxes, and huskies. Lapland boasts a rich cultural heritage, which includes the indigenous Sámi people who have lived in the region for thousands of years, maintaining a deep connection to the land and its resources.

Through a combination of traditional and digital techniques, I aimed to create a multi-layered visual experience that invites the viewer to reflect on the meaning of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. I sought to capture both the raw beauty of the Arctic wilderness and how technology shapes our perception of it. The book's layout and design also play with the idea of digital manipulation, juxtaposing high-resolution images with pixelated textures. Throughout the book, aspects of post-digital publishing can be found. The sequence and design have been carefully crafted to please the viewer’s eye while keeping the narrative flow clean and concise. In creating this book, I explored the concept of materiality by researching various types of paper with different textures to inform my final decision.

At the heart of this project is the concept of Sisu, a Finnish term that denotes a combination of perseverance, courage, and resilience in the face of hardship. Through my photographs, I sought to capture the rugged beauty of the Lapland landscape and the enduring spirit of the people who call it home.

Overall, my photographic book is a tribute to the power of human resilience and how art can help us make sense of the world around us. Through its innovative use of digital and traditional media, it invites viewers to reflect on the complex relationship between nature and technology, and how we can harness the power of both to create something truly remarkable.
